Energizing Monster Popsicle – Perfect parent fuel for Halloween night!

One of the biggest misconceptions I get from people when I tell them I like to avoid refined sugar is that they think I don’t like sugar. To the contrary – I LOVE SUGAR. I am fully, deeply, utterly in-love with sugar. I am, in fact, addicted to it. I know I am because I can feel myself crave it in the mid-afternoon lull. Sometimes I can even smell sweet caramel out of no where and I begin to salivate just thinking about a taste of it. Yup, if you put a bowl of Halloween candy in front of me I would have a hard time not eating it. If it is even in the house I am likely to consume it regardless of how hard I try to not to. This is why we just don’t buy it or products that contain it (I read ingredient lists religiously).

The reason why I try to avoid it on a daily basis is that sugar causes inflammation in the body. And what does inflammation cause…? Disease. This may manifest for some people as joint pain, cramping, recurring headaches or even a tendency to get sick a lot during cold and flu season. With my husband’s chronic arthritis (an auto-immune disease) and my history of cancer we are trying to build strength in our immune systems. Sugar can block your immunity from strengthening. So, the goal is to stay away from it. There may be days when I eat it – like the Starburst I ate yesterday from my coworkers desk – but I do try hard not to. But, I am human. I find I will give into temptation during times of major change (like maybe my return to work after mat leave?), traveling (perhaps a trip back East for my sister’s wedding) or lack of preparation (often from mommy exhaustion – yup, it’s a real thing!). It is at these moments, where I re-group and remind myself that if I only make one healthy change every day for the next year, I will have made 365 healthy changes. That’s a whole lot of health folks!

Ingredients
  • 1 serving Vega Sport Sugar-Free Energizer
  • 1 cup water
  • Fun Popsicle molds
Instructions
  1. Mix water and Vega Sugar-Free Energizer together in a glass until well mixed.
  2. Pour into Popsicle molds and place in freezer over night.
  3. Enjoy before a light workout or as an afternoon coffee replacement.

Product Review: Vega Sport Sugar-Free Energizer

What the what?!?! When did it get it get to August? Ugh. Well, summer is passing by faster than I can say Donna Summers (throw back to SNL anyone?) and while I have been busy hitting up the garage sale season, swimming in the ocean and well, GROWING A HUMAN INSIDE OF ME, I have not been neglecting you on purpose, dear readers. I will update you all very soon about what has been going on but first – I have to tell you about this awesome new product that Vega has recently put out!I was super excited to try this product out when my friends at Vega approached me earlier in the month! A sugar-free, naturally sweetened energizer drink that has only 5 calories!  When the product arrived at my house and I read the labels I was disappointed that I could not try it – warning label says not for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. So, I had to pass the product on to my husband to try and let me know what he thought.

Here’s the scoop:

1. He loves that the product maintains his energy and has no ugly side effects like coffee gives him – making this a perfect substitute his normal java addiction.

2. You get two flavour choices: Lemon-Lime or Acai Berry. Both taste really good and there is no weird after taste which sometimes happens with other low-calorie drinks.

3. Worked perfect as a pick-me-up during a late night at work or before a tennis game. You will want to take this before a shorter workout such as a 30mins run, before a yoga class or a cross-fit training that is less the 30mins.

4. Cost effective: If you purchase the on-the-go packs you’re paying under $2 CND for one serving – which is actually cheaper than getting a large coffee at most cafes. AND you get a low-calorie, low-carbohydrate, sugar-free drink with some fiber in it.

Only one problem with it…

This was his only complaint. He could not get it to dissolve into a nice smooth drink whether he stirred it or shook it up in a bottle. This meant that the texture was a little gritty – almost like when you have tea leaves leak out of your tea steeper – but not to the point that he would not drink the product.

If I wasn’t pregnant and planning to breast feed for the next 12 months I would be ALL OVER the Vega Sport Sugar Free Energizer! In the meantime, I can watch my husband enjoy it. Check out their website for product purchasing & promos https://shopca.myvega.com/
